Now, I’m not a fan (yet!) of the new nail craze with all of the big beads and things on the nails like I have been seeing on some of the hottest celebrities. Maybe I’m a lame but sometimes there is a such thing as...too much!

Well, this piece of jewelry caught my eye and I really like it. Probably because it is mixed with elegance and a tad bit of the unexpected. What an original way to spruce up a simple wedding day manicure, huh?! Only if I could find out the original source for this photo will I be even more happy. If you find or know it, please let me know.

I can already think of the things that I could do with them like fill them with fresh flowers for a swank little dinner party or display them on a book shelf or coffee table for a great conversation piece. I just love this.

The Real Budget Breaker: Your Guest List

This post is looong overdue and I feel it very valuable to share it with you or anyone you know that is getting married. Over the next few weeks, many wedding professionals will be consulting couples as they prepare for their upcoming Spring and Summer weddings. I have had my share to come through my office and I how I like them, they have wonderful ideas for their upcoming nuptials. I love to hear the unique ideas that come forth and how a couple met and why they need to do this and that to make their day extra special. I love to see the many pictures cut and torn out of some of the most popular wedding glossies that brides keep tucked away in their new planning binders. I also love to hear that they want their weddings to just be plain ol’ FABULOUS. All of that is music to my ears. So what’s the problem, you ask?! There’s two problems actually, the budget and the guest list.

Most surveys in 2010 found that the average wedding cost is $27,000. What?!?! You’re probably thinking, “no way, I’ll never pay that for a wedding” But, wait. You just may find yourself doing so when you are preparing to have an entire day of partying with close to 150-200 (or more) family and friends. Let me make this clear, first of all, I’m not at all saying that in order to have the wedding of your dreams that $27,000 is what it will take. I want to show you that the number of people that you are inviting will escalate the cost one way or another.

When you factor in the venue(s), attire (even if the groom’s tux is free), all stationery (DIY or custom), favors, catering (let’s face it food costs no matter how or who you conjure up to prepare it), decorations, transportation, cake, rings, photography, videographer, YOUR planner, and entertainment, you will be at around $80-130 per person. It may sound good when you say out loud, “the food is only $16 per person”….well, when you do say it like that, it does sound wonderful. But, that’s just for your guests to have a guaranteed plate for that particular price. It doesn’t mention all of the other things that go into “wooing” your guests (and let’s not talk about taxes and staff fees, mmkay?!) And, if you are using flowers (real or faux), they cost, too.! With more guests, the more tables and chairs you need, the more décor you will need, the more food and drink you will need, the more favors you will need, should I keep on?

So, before you look at your potential Planner’s fee (okaay?!) or your photographer’s quote (great quality photos will last a lot longer than the décor, food, and favors) and squawk with buck eyes, please note that these are the least of your worries. It’s the ever-so-growing guest list that will cause you a headache at the end of the day. You are paying so why not know the the truth and how to effectively save you money.

This I know all too well. I’ve seen couples that took this advice and were pleased with the money saved by cutting their guests list in order to have what they wanted and I have witnessed couples that just wouldn’t budge and now are still paying the cost after the wedding is said and done because they wanted a LARGE wedding. What’s the saying, more money more problems? You better believe it.

So, if you are willing to take the advice from a professional, this is for you. When working up that magical list, create an A-B-C list. The As are the primary people that you know will be there like immediate family and close friends (even those that will certainly travel to be with you), the Bs are those that may possibly come but if they didn’t, you would understand (ie: ex-coworkers, co-workers), and the sweet Cs, these are the people that you have to dig deep to even remember. The Cs are long lost school friends, friends of friends, old neighbors, facebook friends (even those that you haven’t even met in person), the entire church, your Greek letter organization, or people you just find on the street to come to your wedding (well maybe not the latter one) but you see where I’m going.

So let’s see what this can look like with a small budget (I hear this number a lot so I’m using it). For a budget of $5000 and a guest list of 200 people, this is what the numbers will look like (I’m also including the average % for each category):

Reception (always the biggest chunk) (but actually close to 50%) 40%- $2000,

Attire-10%- $500

Photos/Video-12%- $600

Music-8%- $400

Flowers & Décor- 10%- $500

Stationery- 5%- $250

Rings- 2%- $100

Transportation- 2%- $100

Gifts (bridal party, wedding favors)- 3%- $150

Ceremony Site (donation and clergy fees)- 3%- $150

Other (tips, marriage license, taxes, hair/nails)- 5%- $250

You might be able to squeeze in a wedding cake for about $100. And, with $10 per person allotted for the Reception, you will have to get very creative with your menu. *side note: you and your bridal party have to be included in the 200 or else your budget is really shot*. Not too realistic, is it?!

I urge you to take a look at your budget and your guest list. These two bad boys can make you or break you. Am I saying that you can’t have a really nice wedding on a budget, of course not! Many of my couples are on a set budget and we make it realistically work and the style of their wedding is not compromised. We just plan smart. And, that’s what I want you to do. Plan smart.

If you have to move your date down the road a little bit in order to save more or have more time to pay for the things that you want, by all means do it. Many couples are now planning longer engagements so that they have the time and resources needed to plan their dream weddings.

So, here’s to smart planning and beautiful weddings. Just don’t let your guests compromise that for you.

Yaayy!!! We're in Arkansas Bride Magazine!

This past summer we had several beautiful weddings that we took part in. One in particular was the wedding of Crystal and Vernon Trotter that was so unique, non-traditional, and fabulous that Arkansas Bride Magazine featured them. How amazing is that?!

The Trotter's uber talented photographer, Jamie Fender, captured the beauty of the day and submitted the photos. The couple, needless to say, were very excited...I ~~was~~ AM, too!

Crystal and Vernon enlisted the talent from some of Central Arkansas' best for her wedding. Catering was tastefully provided by Simply the Best Catering, the Arkansas Arts' Center was the gorgeous and contemporary venue, "drop your mouth to the floor" florals and decor were creatively designed by Distinctive Designs by Tanarah, the lounge furniture was provided by Trendstyle Events, wedding planning and pretty paper by Pink Tea Rose Events, vintage transportation was by Vintage Motor Cars, and sounds by DJ Klas'sik Mobile DJ Service.

I LOVE!!!

I am in love with the newest bouquet trend using brooches in place of flowers. How stunning does this look? And, not to mention what a creative way to incorporate priceless heirlooms passed down from grandparents and other family members. The only thing I say is, you better not toss this beauty at the reception to the single ladies.

Inspiration Board: Houndstooth Bridal Shower

It's Winter time and I couldn't resist creating an inspiration board that includes Houndstooth. This black and white checker-y pattern is seen mostly on wool coats, hats, scarves, and even shoes. And, it's quite classy might I add. I believe that this would make for a classic and chic bridal shower, don't you? And, as you can see adding the simple and feminine flower, Anemone, sets the tone just right. Enjoy browsing the board.

Our 2010 Year in Review

Usually around this time of the year, I'm ready to push on fast to get to the new year. But, this year was different. Solely, because I stayed committed to thinking differently and responding to tough situations smarter. There were some great things that I learned this year and some rough times that caught my attention on how strong I'd actually become through prayer and waiting on God to sort some things out (versus me trying to move Him faster). Many of my goals that I set at the beginning of the year were achieved (some I'm still working on) but I feel good about leaving this year behind with good thoughts and a promising journey into 2011. So, I'll share a bit of my 2010 Year in Review with you.

I worked with some amazing couples this year. They turned out to be great friends and have referred friends and family to me for 2011 events. (I THANK y'all so much)
I had the opportunity to work with some passionate and talented event professionals this year that has turned into some good friendships. I'm looking forward to what we create for 2011.
I tapped into more of my creativity and gifts. I have a love for pretty paper and designing coordinating pretties for events. With the support of past and current clients, I've started to design more and hopefully offer more in 2011 (I will!)
As a business owner who is a scaredy cat, I pushed myself to begin to face some of my fears. This year, I challenged myself to work hard through the fear. The end result? Success! Even during the times that I failed at some things.
I failed. Yes! At some attempts, I failed but welcomed the failure (instead of getting scared and pitiful). I learned from the areas in which I failed in order to try new ways to getting something done.
I learned a little bit more about me. (Way more to learn!) Especially as an entrepreneur, I am striving to be better at my craft each and everyday. My clients will appreciate that more.
One of my weddings was featured in a wedding publication. A major goal and success! (This jazzy bride pushed me to do the unthinkable...and I am grateful!)
I embraced social media a little bit more. However, I need to commit to blogging more regularly and sticking to my blog calendar. This I will work on better in 2011. (Girl Scouts honor!) And, it is through social media that I have received many of my new 2011 clients, so why wouldn't I give it more attention?!. *THANK YOU*
I realized that there is not too much that I can't do (Thanks, D Rich). If I need a bit more information, training and education, it's right at my fingertips and all I have to do is learn. ...then I can do! This is a biggie for me, y'all!
I connected with like-minded individuals and follow (if not stalk) those that inspire me. This does not necessarily mean that it is a celebrity designer or planner, either. I desire to be around those who want a little bit more than me. They continue to push me. And, their light shines to me that I can do all things through Christ through strengthens me.
I'm getting used to being an entry level tech geek. With some great buddies who love technology, I'm upgrading myself and the gadgets I use. (this will benefit my clients)
There were some "business" connections that were not healthy for me. And, it is so not my character to "cut" myself off from others but staying true to my goals, I've started to learn how to leave and learn. I'm working on loving from a distance but keeping the toxic away from me and my business (...and my clients)
I added a new team member!!! No, not really. I gave birth to a gorgeous baby girl shortly after my last wedding. This was the biggest hit of the year!

These are just a few highlights of how my year molded me. I am sincerely grateful for all of the good and (ugly) that has occurred this year. I now know that I am stronger and I believe in my company a whole lot more than I did last year. The growth is what inspires me and keeps me working each day. I will certainly miss 2010 (and kind of sad to see it go) but 2011 holds many great things for my company, my family, and myself. I have to let this year go in order to walk into a wonderful season of blessings. I'm ready.

Christmas Pretty!

The above tree (and space) is just pretty. Tobi Fairly, an Arkansas top interior designer, designed this tree for her daughter's playroom. On Tobi's blog she stated that she and her daughter loves to "monkey" around and the sock monkey was the inspiration for the Christmas tree. I love it. So whimsical and fun. I'd love to hang out in this girly room.

So, if you are experiencing "decorator's block" this season, let Tobi inspire you. Pull from something that you like or collect. Do YOU and that my dear...exudes style!

Tish's Quick Holiday Decor Tips

You have probably started to deck your halls and make them all festive for the holidays, right?! Well, if not, I have a few tips that can get you going.

1. Stick with a theme. Or, go with your theme from last year and spruce it up. Just make sure you have your colors or actual theme (i.e. snowflakes, penguins, ice) chosen. If you have to do a little shopping, this will make it easier for you to go to the exact items you need.

2. Recycle. This will save you big. Add to what you already have. Need fillers or a few more ornaments? Just buy these few items than purchasing a whole new "Christmas Decor Wardrobe".

3. Try Mesh. Deco Poly Mesh is wonderful and such a great filler. You can purchase it from your local florist or decorator's store. Use it on wreaths, trees, and garlands. It is so easy to use but if you need a little help, ask the florist (or decorator) to show you a few tricks before you leave the store.

4. Fragrances. Fill your home or office with the fragrances of the Holidays. Do this by adding potpourri or scented candles and oils to your space. An immediate warmth will feel your space.

5. Don't underestimate ornaments. Fill glass jars or platters with ornaments of various sizes. Place them on your coffee table, end tables, mantle, or bookshelves. What a simple, chic, and beautiful way to decorate. Be sure to check your local dollar stores before heading to your speciality shops. We want to save, right?!

6. Shop your back yard. Pine cones, acorns, branches, oh my! I'm certain you have those near by. And, not to mention tons of leaves... Get a can of gold (or any color) spray paint and go to town on transforming these natural elements into chic decor items. Place them in a bowl or platter and add some pillar candles and I think you have a masterpiece.

7. Candle Clusters. Use lots of them in clusters of various sizes. If you are like me and have small children at home, I'd use LED battery operated candles. Remember those items you're going to spraypaint? Place these candles in the center and there you go.

8. Ribbon, Ribbon, and More Ribbon. Christmas time is not a time where Less is More. You can go BIG during this time. Add fun ribbon of various sizes, colors, or patterns to your wreaths, tree, swags, and garlands.

9. Coordinated Gifts. Keep your theme going when you begin to wrap your gifts. Let your gift wrap also be a part of your theme. Add that ribbon to it and what a great extra this will be to your holiday decor.

10. Get Carried Away. Carry your theme throughout your space by adding candles, swags, or smaller trees to other rooms. You can bring smaller holiday doodads into other rooms such as your kitchen, bathroom, and home office.

Busy Bee Indeed

This fall season has certainly been a busy one for the PTRE staff. In late September, I gave birth to my second daughter and has had the opportunity to be home with her. In addition to nurturing her, I have a 5 year old little diva and my hubby's handsome 14 year old son to see after and make sure that they equally have me when needed. I will tell you that this time at home from the office (and my day job) afforded me the opportunity to reflect on the things that are most important to me. And, that is family. Hopefully, I can spend more time with them and enjoy the growth that is occurring right before my eyes.

As soon as I thought I was ready to get back in the swing of things, I had to undergo an operation this past Thursday that has now caused me to stay off of my feet and get much needed rest. So, I am bound to bed for a little while with my trustworthy (knocking on the wooden headboard) laptop to get back to blogging and planning my events for 2011.

I thank you for being patient and faithful to my little blog and hope that I can bring some interesting things back to it. Now, let's get ready to prepare for the holidays, shall we?!

Ask the Planner: Invitations and Gifts

Question: Is it appropriate for me to include my gift registry in my wedding invitations?

Our Response:
This question does come up quite a bit. But as much as we don't want to tell you NO to anything this is one that we advise you not to do. No gift information or cash/gift card requests should be included in your wedding invitation. Including this information could send off a message that you are more interested in the gift than your guest that you are inviting.

However, you can include this information on your wedding website, blog, and shower invitation. Make sure that your mom, bridal party, and other gal pals know where you are registered so that they can share this information with others.

We'd like to hear from you, what are your thoughts on including gift information in wedding invitations?

Got a favor?

Many brides spend a lot of time contemplating "the perfect favor" for her guests. And, I'm sure that guests look forward to some type of goody at the wedding reception. But, as a professional planner and one who is one of the last people at the reception and has seen ALL sorts of favors come and go and be left on the tables, floors, and in the waste baskets, I have a few suggestions that can help you save big on these little trinkets (meaning NOT WASTE MONEY ON UNWANTED FAVORS).

Just to say that you "have or had" a favor shouldn't drive you to just pick any kind of treat to give to your guests. Are they necessary? It's totally up to you and your budget!

When I have clients to ask me what type of favor should they gift, I make certain to share with them to give something that they wouldn't mind receiving at a reception. Successful favors are usually those that are practical. How many of you swoon over bubbles, CDs, coasters (with the couples picture on them), matches, tealight candles, and something homemade that you can't recognize the purpose? I guarantee you that if you are using one of these favors for your reception, I'm not personally digging at you. Do what you like and rock it.

But keep in mind that guests tend to like things that they can use (eat or drink) right then. Here are a few of our suggestions that will keep your "cleaning crew" from trashing your unused trinkets from your reception:

Interactive candy or dessert stations
Photobooth keepsakes
Something yummy to eat in pretty packaging (i.e. monogrammed cookies, chocolates, candies, candy apples, pretzels)
Personalized/Monogrammed pretties such as glassware, paperweights, lip balm, sunblock, playing cards, fans (especially if it's during the hot summer months),
Signature beverages

Again, these are just a few of our suggestions that we have seen in action and have been very successful. You must consider the number of guests that you are serving and how much you will spend per person. Give your guests something that you would appreciate if you were a guest. Don't have a favor in mind, that's fine too! Great food, music, and fun can be a sweet treat, too!

Princess and the Frog Tea Party

I had the pleasure of planning a beautiful birthday party for a client's daughter. When she told me that she wanted a Princess and the Frog tea party, I was ecstatic!!! What a fun party to create for a little girl. I really enjoyed this movie and did my best to incorporate aspects of the film into the party. Enjoy the pictures!

Entrance Table. Included was a treasure of princess pretties for the girls to add to their royal attire.

In the movie, Princess Tiana worked really hard to purchase her own restaurant by keeping all of her tips in a jar. As you can see, she made it!

We're Still Here!

There is a huge gap between this post and my last blog post. Over the past month or so, I have really been working hard to stay on top of business and personal life. Well this time, the personal life has slightly but positively affected business. How?! Well, I have been really sick lately and didn't seem to know what was going on with me. Until one day, it hit me....I might be pregnant or have a long lasting rare virus. The verdict...I'm expecting a little cute package of love!!!

My days are very long and sometimes hard to get by but with the help of my family and my adorable husband, Mr. Officer, I'm able to move forward.

I may not be able to post every day but I can certainly commit to offering at least 3 posts (M-W-F) for you. I'll send updates via the blog, too! ...oohh oohh oohh...any fabulous baby shower ideas?! If so, I'd love to hear them. I'll even share news about that here, too!

Budget Chic DIY for Hearts Day

I was preparing dinner one night and as I opened up one of the canned veggies the cute little pink lightbulb flashed over my head. Not about dinner...but the empty can. So, I had Little Miss tear off the wrapper and then I washed the can and sat it on the counter. Mr. Officer threw it away. I tried this about 2-3 times again only to have him throw them away (on different days). But then, it's probably not that easy living with someone who will create anything out of anything!

I started off with the clean can, tissue paper, glittery 12x12 scrapbook paper, glittery magnet, and some candy. I used the paper trimmer to cut the scrapbook paper down to size (4.25"x10"). With my handy dandy hot glue gun, I wrapped the can with the paper. Then, I added (not shown above) a lighter glittery strip of paper to the center (see below). I secured the magnet with a dollop of hot glue, although the magnet worked fine alone. I then added one sheet of tissue paper and my candy...

Getting Ready for V-Day 2010

At the Planning Diva's house, we have been getting ready for Valentine's day. Since I have a small one at home, it is really fun preparing for her little school and dance class parties. The kiddies are always so excited and appreciative. This past Saturday, little miss and I prepared her VDay goodies for both her school class and her dance class.

We decorated these water bottles for the little dancers to sip on after dance class.

For the party, little miss and I put together these cute treat bags. Just a few pieces of candy and a tube of lip gloss makes a sweet treat.

My dear and sweet mother-in-law is celebrating her birthday today so little miss and I put together a basket of yummy treats for her to enjoy during this coooold weather.

Now, we have to work on the fellows at home so that they will feel all sweet and stuff. What crafty creations are you working on for Valentine's 2010?!

We're Under Construction...

The Pink Tea Rose Events website is under construction and we will hopefully have our new website up very soon (like on Monday, seriously!). So, if you have tried to access our page...it's not pretty-it's not even a page. I'm working very fast trying to get the new digs ready so please excuse the dust as I clean up.

I decided at the wrong time to change it (on the weekend) when my provider's hours of operation are weekdays only. (can you see my sad face?!) The result of a hasty new website decision....no website over the weekend! (now, I'm pouting). But, the wait may be good for me.

Happy New Year from Pink Tea Rose Events! This has been an awesome year for us getting to know many of you, our clients, and 2010 potential and current clients. Have a great time bringing in the New Year.

In case you need a last minute hostess gift to take to one of your parties, Martha Stewart has given a great inexpensive option, beautifully wrapped black eyed peas. A Southern tradition is to eat black eyed peas on New Year's symbolizing humility and good fortune. My mother in law prepares them faithfully each year and makes us eat them.

I don't think anything would be wrong if you added a pretty ribbon and tag to a Black Eyed Peas cd either. What host wouldn't enjoy that?

Diva's Holiday Break

Happy Holidays! I hope that you had a wonderful Christmas with your loved ones. It was amazing to have a whole week to do last minute preparations to the house and for gift giving. I must say...I'm enjoying the time off.

I am pretty sure that there were quite of few engagement proposals, too. But, if not, many pretty ladies get their bling during the New Year festivities. How exciting?!

Help…it’s a potluck!

This is the first year that I have been part of or invited to several office and organizational Holiday potlucks. Yikes. My dilemma is, I can cook but am no where near a chef or a casserole diva! This week alone, I have three potlucks and that’s not including next week. So, I’ve called on my dear friend, Mr. Google to search for some simple (and I mean simple) dishes that I can tastefully contribute to the Holiday party food menu.

So, I’ve narrowed it down to these options:

Good ole faithful veggie tray with a (semi) homemade ranch dip
Sweet potato casserole
Miniature Chicken and Tortilla Roll-ups
Spinach Dip
or, Chicken Quesadillas

Pretty simple, huh?! And, all of the choices are quite reasonable and won’t break the bank. And, if you’re planning a Holiday Potluck, Martha Stewart has a neat checklist and timeline for you to use to get you started?

So, do you think I have some pretty good choices for my upcoming Potlucks? Have any suggestions that are super easy?!

Shopping for your Bridal Party…after Christmas!

Have you already decided on what you will get your bridesmaids as “thank you” gifts? If you’re in the business of saving some cash, consider purchasing their gifts at the "after the Christmas" sale. You can find some great gift ideas that will be marked 50%-75% off. Most department stores (and our favorite discount stores) will have a large variety of cosmetic bags and totes, fragrance and cosmetic gift sets, bath and body products, and some jewelry that would be perfect for gifts. Don’t forget the fellows, too! This would be a great reason to bring along your boo so he can grab some items for his boys.

Don’t wait to stand in a crowd of people to decide what you will purchase. Browse the stores now when you’re out and about and make note of what you will look out for. Use your camera phone to snap photos of the items that you want to remember to go back and purchase and jot down the price (it’ll be less after Christmas if it’s a holiday gift item).

Tis’ the Season to be Giving

At the Planning Diva’s home, we are enjoying looking at our Christmas décor and in the neighborhood. We look forward to watching Christmas movies and eating tasty baked goods. Our little ones are making their lists (and we sure wish they’d check them twice…and reduce!) and we are excitingly browsing store shelves to pick out the perfect gift of gratitude for those that we love. With the Christmas atmosphere among us, it is easy to get caught up in the commercial aspect of Christmas. In our home, we celebrate Christmas as a component of our faith and to utilize this time to give—to those we love and those who are not as fortunate as we are.

We have donated gently worn clothing, coats, and toys to our local Goodwill and organized a food and coat drive at our local church. Not at all am I saying do any of what the Diva’s family has done, but I do encourage you to share your heart with the unfortunate during this holiday season. Some simple ways you can help is:

· Save your change when you’re shopping and drop it into the Salvation Army Red Kettles

· Adopt an angel from an Angel Tree at your local mall or JCPenney

· Donate clothing, toys, and coats to your local women’s shelter, Goodwill, or homeless shelter

· Donate non-perishable items and/or money to your local soup kitchen, food bank, church, or shelter

· And, you can always volunteer at either one of the places mentioned above!

You've heard the saying, "it's always better to give than receive". And, I believe that you will reap what you sow. And with a generous heart, you're bound to reap a harvest!

Pantone Color for 2010: Turquoise

It is in! The Pantone 2010 color of the year is, Turquoise. The soothing but bold color resembles the dreamy look of an ocean and is sure to be seen on the runways and treading along many wedding aisles next year. I really believe that this is a great color that can slow dance with almost any color. Pair it with pink, reds, browns, greens, and even purples but you don't have to stop there--yellows will add a brightening touch, too!

I'm excited about this color because I have at least three darling and daring couples that have already adopted Turquoise as their wedding color with some exciting elements to compliment it.

And, I couldn't resist sharing with you a pair of Turquoise shoes that are high on my Holiday wish list. The shoes above are by Paris Hilton and have the most gorgeous pink sole (watch out Louboutin!). They're on my wish list because they are…SOLD OUT! But, seriously, look how gorgeous they are.

This is a post that I should have scheduled to launch on Thanksgiving but you were probably doing what I was doing...spending time with loved ones and eating some really great food.

Thanksgiving is not the only time that I can thank my Superstar Readers, right?!

I do want to give a warm and fuzzy thank you to my past and current clients. It is because of you that I can share my talent and love for weddings. I have had the opportunity to meet some great clients that turned into some fabulous friends (grooms included). For those of you who have just sent an email, read the posts, visit the website or "facebook" me your thoughts, I say thank you. You really don't know how much that means to me. It keeps me going.

I would be lying to you if I said that I never get afraid of being a business owner, I do shake in my faux snake skin boots occasionally. But, I keep coming back for more because of you!

And, a very special thanks to all of the vendors that I have worked {and work} with. (I'm a planner and not a one woman show) A lot goes behind the scenes of a wedding and it takes passionate and creative vendors to pull it off. And, that you do. Thank you for being in my circle of wedding loving friends.

"Precious" the Movie

My husband and I went to the Rave Theater in Little Rock on Friday evening to see the much anticipated movie, "Precious", directed by Lee Daniels and based off of the novel, "Push" by Sapphire. This movie was also produced by Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey. Because the movie is playing in only select theaters, the Rave Theater had to serve many (and I mean many) movie watchers on that evening.

For those who have not seen the movie, I will not go into great detail but did want to share a few of my thoughts. If you haven't heard of the movie, here it is in a nutshell:

Precious is an overweight, illiterate, HIV positive, sexually and physically abused poor inner city teen that is pregnant with her second child as a result of incestuous abuse by her mother's partner. Precious is played by newcomer, Gaborey Sidibe.
Her abusive mother, played by comedian Mo'nique, sexually and physically abuses her. She was also very jealous of Precious' two kids who were conceived by rape (from her father who has AIDS). The mother is determined to soak up as much as she can from the government system by collecting welfare and insisting Precious do the same.
Precious enters an alternative school to get her GED and meets a teacher (played by Paula Patton) who is stern and has special interest in seeing her students succeed. Some of the humor of the movie comes from the classmates.
Encouraged by her mother, Precious finally decided to go to the welfare office where she meets her social worker (played by Mariah Carey who is glammed down completely) to receive assistance. During her meetings, Precious shares information about her life at home (which you'll have to see how it is for yourself).
Other stars played in the film, such as: Sherry Shepherd (receptionist) and Lenny Kravitz (nurse) …very small roles might I add.
There's a good chance that you might cringe in your seat and even shed a few tears as some of the scenes are quite brutal and harsh.

The saddest part of this film is reality. For those of you who don't know, aside from running Pink Tea Rose Events, I work full-time in Human Services at a local high school. Our youth (and their parents) have to deal with so many oppressors that may affect the positive outcome for their future. Obesity, poverty, depression, illiteracy, STDs, sexual and physical abuse, violence, and the lack of education is destroying our communities. This horrible reality just doesn't affect the Black community and has no specific color or race.

There are quite a few shocking scenes to leave you wondering, "does this really happen in reality?". Please believe me that it does. Now, I'm not a movie critic and don't know the art of dissecting a film to tell you if it's Oscar-worthy. I'm not that good at it. But, I will say that Mo'Nique did a fabulous job portraying such a deep and troubled character. And, hats off to Gaborey Sidibe for stepping into such a powerful, first role as an actress.

Is this a film that I would want to watch over and over, probably not. In my own personal opinion, I thought it still missed something like-- better musical scoring, a better timeline of Precious' rise, and even a better ending. But, again, I am not a movie critic just a ticket paying patron who loves the Big Screen.

The issues embedded into this film are those that need immediate action in our country…in our communities. Let's stand to empower our communities and equip our youth (and parents) with resources to help them improve their way of living, believing, and responding. There's a message of hope that is highlighted in the movie "Precious" and I am all for that. And, no matter how successful I am or become, I cannot ignore the fact that there are others who are in dire need. My husband and I are teaching our children now about the importance of keeping our hand in our community and the power of outreach.

I first saw this convertible dress on David Tutera's, My Fair Wedding. David took one of his brides to a salon that offered the Dessy Twist Wrap Dress to brides who have bridesmaids of various shapes and sizes. Before our eyes, the salon associate took the same style dress and twisted and wrapped each girl so that the dress was flattering. The styles are almost endless. This can really take the witchhunt out of dress shopping for your bridesmaids. But, don't just stop with your girls! The Twist Wrap Dress is a great item to have in your own wardrobe (I'm leaning towards the black one). One dress for many occasions!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and this is where the color pink is blasted all around the nation. What a great cause to see pink.

Here in Arkansas we are getting prepared for our Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure walk on Saturday, October 17th in Little Rock and really excited about it, too! Many of us know someone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer and this month means a great deal. There are also many ways that we can show them that we care and are in support of the cause to find a cure for to save the ta-tas.

PTRE Update: VACATION

That's right! Pink Tea Rose Events will be closed for some vacation time. Don't get jealous, yet, we are not taking our private jet to the islands to be waited on hand and foot. (but wouldn't that be nice?)

We have had a very busy summer and need some time to remind the family and friends that we really do love them. You understand, don't you?! Sure you do.

Have you ever wondered where the corsage or boutonnière should be pinned or who should where them? Well, read on...

Corsages are typically worn by women at weddings and special occasions. The proper place to pin these miniature beauties is on the left side about two to three inches above the breast.

Wrist corsages can also be worn in place of the traditional pinned piece. The proper place to wear the wristlets is on the left wrist.

Who should wear corsages? Mothers, grandmothers, aunts or special guests that have a special relationship with the bride or groom should wear a corsage. Some brides order them for their hostesses or servers but it is definitely not a must.

Who shouldn’t get one? Your DJ, musicians, videographer, photographer, pianist, hair Stylist, flower girls….your wedding planner. (I threw this in for me) If you are paying your participants and vendors for services, you should leave them off the floral list. This may save you a couple of bucks, too!

Boutonnieres, which mean “buttonhole”, are typically worn by men and are placed on the left lapel where a “buttonhole” would normally be.

Who should wear a boutonniere? Fathers, grandfathers, uncles, special guests, groomsmen, ring bearer, and ushers should receive a boutonniere.

Depending on what your officiant is wearing, he/she may or may not prefer to wear a floral piece. If a ceremonial robe or a Giorgio Armani suit is worn, the flowers may not be worn. Be sure to ask first if you can before ordering.

I found these remote control candles at Bed, Bath & Beyond and thought they were amazing. Some venues prohibit the use of candles and this would be a great way to still incorporate the look of a candle. You could line the entrance way with these battery operated fellows and not have to worry about a clumsy guest knocking them over to cause a fire-y scene.

Not only would these candles be great for a safe and fireproof event but at home. These are even perfect if you have small children or pets.

As I look at wedding albums and photograpers websites, I'm seeing more pictures of the wedding gown hanging prior to the bride wearing it. These make some really great photos. And a fellow wedding planner blogger, Aletha at Pearls Events had a great post about the ugly hangers that we tend to leave the dresses on that will be captured in these memorable shots.

I found some interesting options for hangers just for that perfect shot of a perfect dress. It's all in the details, right?! Right.

Yesterday, I shared an inexpensive pantry find that could make a "talk of the party" centerpiece by using Jell-o. Well, today I'm sharing just a few more budget chic pantry finds that will help make your next party the "talk"; atleast for the centerpieces.

Fresh garden picks such as cherry or grape tomatoes, corn, sweet peas, or green beans will make an eye catching surprise to a garden party or outdoors cookout. With fresh flowers to top it off, you're headed for the WOW!

Coffee Beans have been popular for quite some time and I think they still look great inserted in the tablescape. I used these little guys for a coffee themed book signing event and the entire room smelled of fresh coffee. Table Details: Number Cards

I really like the idea of having table numbers at all weddings that have 50 or more guests. A bride may or may not choose to have a seating chart designating where each guest should go and that's totally okay. But, even if you are a bride that is doing away with the seating chart and the use of place or escort cards, still consider numbering or naming your tables.

For buffet style receptions, it's easier to release a few tables by numbers (or names) rather than having all of your tables rush the buffet. Can you imagine the long, long line of guests? Whether you decide to designate seating or not, get creative with your table numbers. Bring out your wedding theme or colors by using photos, names, bling, or textured papers. Remember, it's all in the details.

While your guests are waiting to be served the delicious meal of the night, be sure to have some smashing entertainment for them to enjoy. It'll make the wait worthwhile...while looking at their unique table number to be called.

Last Minute 4th of July Bash!

Tomorrow our country will celebrate it's birthday and there will be many cookouts and parties across the country. And, we will be out of the office beginning today until Monday so that we can spend some quality time with our friends and family. We hope you do, too!

Just in case you waited to the last minute to decide on having a festive get-together, I provided some quick, easy, and inexpensive elements to incorporate. And, they should be easy to find at your local grocery store and craft stores. Have a safe and happy 4th of July and talk to you on Monday!

1. 4th of July paper plates and things: I'm sure you've seen them at your local Wal-Mart, Target, or even Dollar Store. They're inexpensive and definitely will go with the theme of your party. If you're unable to find the striped wear, go solid!

2. Flags: You probably can't have enough of these wavy guys. Big ones, small ones, mini ones. You can use them in your buffet centerpiece, cupcakes, potted plants, along the driveway, you name it.

3. Desserts: Strawberries, blueberries, and whip cream on almost anything will say 4th of July. There are several recipes online for parfaits, cupcakes, sheet cakes, and tarts that will certainly make a hit at your party.

4. Decorations: Hurricane vases filled with layered and dyed rice will look great either on your buffet table, guest tables, or lining the patio. Add a white candle and Voila! If you don't have the time to dye your rice, craft foam beads found at your local Michael's or Hobby Lobby will do the trick.

Red and white carnations placed in striped or solid colored galvanized buckets will look fabulous. Carnations are very inexpensive at about $.50 ea. Add ribbon to the bucket or vase for an extra eye intriguing detail.

5. It's hot!!! So, don't forget about something both the adults and kids can enjoy. POPSICLES. Rocket popsicles are an American favorite and just so happen to come in the colors of our theme.

6. Beverages: Whether it's alcoholic or non-alcolholic, go for color! Try adding frozen strawberries and blueberries for an extra...umph and it'll serve as ice! Or, tonight make ice cubes with the berries mixed in them. Now, that will look great.

7. Favors: Right before you head to the light show, give each of your guests sparklers to light up. Either hand them out or place them in a bucket filled with sand and let guests serve themselves.

8. Food: C'mon...we already know what to serve, All-American Food! Hot Dogs, Grilled Barbecue Chicken, Burgers, Steaks, Potato Salad.... must I go on?!

9. You must have a great time. Laughing is mandatory and mosquito spray, if you're in the South, is a must.

It took you three months to find the perfect wedding day shoe and you look at them everyday until it is time for you to put them on before the ceremony. Many years after the wedding, you'll see photos of your veil, gown, rings, and your groom's tux...but what about your shoes?! It's a great thing to have modern photographers that will keep in mind all of the little details while shooting your pictures.

Groom's Cake

Brides enjoy flipping pages of wedding books to find that great piece of inspiration for their bridal cake. This cake, however, will be one of the greatest details at your reception so why wouldn't you want it to be fierce?!

Here in the South (more than likely nationwide), a groom's cake is a tradition that some brides have not let go of as of yet. Some cakes are the traditional chocolate cake and are pretty and then there are some cakes that fully display the groom's personality and interests. So, if your groom decides that he wants to stick to tradition...let him go all the way out, if budget permits, to personalize his cake.

I posted here about the reason some brides choose to have a groom's cake and the origin.

Some design ideas could include his:

Fraternity letters or mascot

Sports team

Hobbies and Recreation (i.e. fishing, hunting, golf, motorcycles)

Our First Show: Kiss the Brides Expo 2009

Pink Tea Rose Events had a busy, busy weekend. On Saturday, we planned a beautiful shower for a fab couple and then on Sunday we got ready for our first bridal show, Kiss the Brides Expo at Alltel Arena in Little Rock.

I had the best assistant with me, my husband (Mr. Officer). He was superb at assisting brides-to-be and talking with their grooms, handing out cards, encouraging the brides to enter our drawing, and giving out our personalized goodies. And, not to mention set-up. He gets the credit.

Although some things went completely wrong the day before with my banner, my rentals were unable to be picked up, and my fresh out-of-the-box digital frame with photos decided to not work, but I don't think that it sold the booth short of too much. Brides really liked the space and were drawn in by the zebra and hot pink...so I'm thrilled. We gathered what we had on hand and made fabulous lemonade out of the lemons that were handed.

I will post detail shots of our booth shortly but had to post these pictures that were taken by a great photographer in the Little Rock area, Eli Murray Photography.

Just in Case: Bad Breath Killers

It's about 5 minutes before you walk down the aisle and you forgot to pop the mint. What do you do? Or, you just enjoyed the great garlic pasta dish at your reception and you're wanting to spend time with your guests and there's no gum or mints available. What to do?

No worries. Here's a few foods that may be easy to access for you.

An Apple. A Lemon. And Garnish.

Pack an apple or two in your wedding day bag and have your maid of honor slice it for you to munch on. An apple? Yes. Apples and other crisp foods (carrots, celery, pears) are high in fiber and the chewing produces more saliva causing a scrubbing rinse for your mouth. And, not to mention it helps fill your belly in case of an attack of nerves.

So, what to do at the reception? If you're having sweet tea served with lemon wedges or water with lemon, these little guys work well. Suck on it or chew the rind a few times. Another great way to avoid bad breath is to chew on the parsley or mint garnish that is typically on your plate. Chewing releases the breath freshening oils. Now, remember it's not gum so don't go around with it in your mouth all night.

Because they're just HIP. Okay, okay...a little corny but read on! You must take a look at these gorgeous flowers that are tie dyed. The mixture of colors makes the flower pop even more. The flowers that are shown are real stems and have been dyed with hypodermic needles in the stems. There are even some flowers that don't have to go through this process because of how they were bred.

Easter + My Darling Diva Time

Besides having an event the day before Easter, I had to carve out some time to be with my darling little diva. After Easter service, we enjoyed dinner with our family and did what we love to do on Sunday evenings....nap!!!

When we woke up, we had a great time setting the table for our after dinner/nap snack and juice. Since it was Easter, we had to have our snack in style.

We had a sugary good time. And, it worked out to enjoy miniature cupcakes, fruit punch, and candy necklaces while watching the rain pour heavily outside. Good thing we skipped hiding the eggs this year!

Have you decided what means of transportation you'll utilize on your Big Day? Will you rent a luxury vehicle or book your local limo service? Will you rent a vehicle for the weekend or use your own?

Many brides envision going and leaving the wedding in grand style (and they should) but...there are times where you can opt to save those Benjamins and put them somewhere else. Not at all am I saying, "don't book the stretch", just consider these points before doing so.

1) Same Venue. If your ceremony and reception are in the same location, who's going to see you in your rented wheels? Nobody...everyone is walking (into the next room)!

2) Entrance. If you don't plan to have a grand exit or for the matter, grand entrance, who's going to see where you put all of your hard earned dollars?

4) Go ahead and do...Rent a less expensive vehicle (if you refuse to ride in your own) that you can ride in for the entire weekend. (i.e. something that doesn't require its own driver in a tux and top hat).
